Fabrics: choose for the brief and the design

The nicest colour on the shelf is a tempting starting point. Before buying it, check the brief and the selected material’s labels too. That keeps the creative choice while reducing the chance of discovering a mismatch at the end.

Read colour, material and tags together

The fabric shop displays bolts and a Strawberry Fields Simple Cotton sample. The swatch, item name and tags are more informative than colour alone.

The official material families include cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. They are a range of choices, not a quality ranking. Strawberry Fields Simple Cotton in the image is a specific shop item; its name, swatch and labels should be read together. A similarly coloured silk need not have the same tags.

Choose one main colour and an accent

Decision Your note
Main colour The colour seen from across the room
Accent A smaller colour that creates contrast
Focal panel Where the eye should land first
Repetition The detail that links front and back

Keep the silhouette fixed while comparing two swatches. Inspect a narrow bodice section and a wider skirt section, since the same motif can read differently. If you want a large motif at the visual center, check its position again when cutting.

Price cannot solve every requirement

A higher price does not establish higher quality or replace style and accessory checks. On a small budget, cover the brief first and leave room for necessary finishing items. To compare material appearance, keep other decisions steady and look at the preview.
